It is a café from another time – but it is still vital today. The hand-painted Kafeneion sign BOURNAOS is as Greek as the sunshine which slowly fades it. From inside you will hear the bass growl of men’s voices and the click-clack of backgammon and worry beads; it is also the home of good local music. The walls sport a splendid collection of 1950s posters – once again covetable – advertising Papastratos cigarettes; and faded black-and-white framed photographs of heroes, braving eternity through bushy moustaches. No EU zone this: a wooden board proclaims that ouzo is still 2 drachmas a glass. Everything is well-used. Pistachio green paint adorns the wooden panelling above a bare wooden floor. Like the massive verdigris church bell hanging from the eucalyptus tree, the café seems to defy time. Costas, intellectual and gentle, runs it; or perhaps, intransigently Greek as it is, it runs Costas …
